A. There is no best, Each type of steel has good and bad properties, and choice of steel, is dependent on what the purpose and environment the knife will be used in. Currently VG-10 steel is the choice for good tactical knives. It is a complicated subject, with many variables. For a great FAQ about blade steel, go to the link below. What is the difference between alloy wheels and normal wheels?
Q. How the alloy wheels can be distinguished from normal wheel? What difference do alloy wheel make in terms of performance / handling / road grip? Is it worth while to make investment in alloy wheels (in terms of difference in performance)?
Asked by Ahmer - Fri Jan 5 09:27:09 2007 - - 4 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Normal wheels are made from a pressed-steel rim, and a pressed-steel centre disc which is welded to the rim. They are cheap, but heavy and generally unattractive, and they are prone to rust. In an impact they tend to bend, sometimes making it possible to continue driving after a serious impact (but at greater risk, so drive carefully). Alloy wheels are made from aluminium alloy, usually cast but sometimes forged. Most are made in one piece, but some can be made of three separate parts bolted together at the rim (lots of tiny bolts around the wheel rim). They are generally more attractive, lighter and less prone to rust. Cast wheels can fracture in a severe impact. The light weight can give benefits in roadholding and handling because of… [cont.]

A. Depending on the wheels you have fitted now you want to get as near to the rolling circumference as possible to stop any problems with the speedo, you could fit 17's with low profiles and maybe 18's as you can get them with 17's as standard. Hope this helps

How much does it cost to fit alloy wheels?
Q. I've got a BMW 3 series (318i). It's got alloy wheels but I fancy changing them to something with a different look. I know very little about cars (so I wouldn't try and do this myself). Assuming I can buy a set of alloys for about 700, how much would it cost to have them fitted and could I just do this at (eg.) Kwikfit?

A. as long as the stud gap and number of studs are the same as the original you can usually change them over yourself as its just like changing a puncture. just make sure the new wheels arent too big for the arch. i.e 16 inch wheels with 70mm tyre should match 17 inch and 50mm as the overall size is almost the same

Writing a book and asking for possible future alloy compositions, any help?
Q. I heard that if we had the technology to have a higher proton count in an atom you would get a lighter and stronger alloy, any truth to this? What are some methods that are currently being used by scientists around the world? What are some newer alloys that are being developed that are much stronger then commonly found materials? Writing a short story for a class and was hoping to make it some what of a probable scenerio for technology in the near future. Thanks for any help you can offer.
Asked by A55H0L3 - Sun Dec 30 15:18:37 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No. Any atoms with a higher proton count are radioactive, and have a very short shelflife. But, I heard about the so called "island of stability" which might prove to be stable. A very strong material, although not an alloy, is carbon nanotubes. Another very strong alloy would be diamond engrained stainless steel.

A. Does this tool look like a socket or is it T shaped? If it's a socket then it fits over one of the wheelnuts - just slot it on and carefully treat it as a wheelnut. I said carefully because too much force will break them and then you are stuffed. If it's T shaped then you will see a screw head about 10mm diameter with 3 holes in it that match the tool. take this off and the wheelnuts are under the centre cap

What is a good method to remove break dust from aluminum alloy rims?
Q. My car has a bunch of break dust built up on the rims and I can't get it off with conventional soap and water. It's only a problem visually, but I would like the rims to be clean. They are aluminum alloy. I don't want to use a chemical that will damage the rim. Just wondering if anyone had success with a specific cleaning agent any help is appreciated.

A. For the past several years our shop has used Gold Glass All Wheel cleaner by Meguiars. It runs about $6.00 a bottle at any parts store. It's completely safe on the aluminum and cuts through baked on brake dust very well. For the most part any aluminum compatible wheel cleaner is going to do the trick. Most parts stores carry 10-12 brands of wheel cleaning products. You can find a cheaper alternative to the Meguiar product but you'll probably spend a bit more time scrubbing. If you really want to make the wheels "pop" invest in some Meguiars Mag and Aluminum Polish. You'll be astounded at the difference it makes in the overall shine. This product is only to be applied to a perfectly cleaned wheel! It runs about $8.00 a tin. It can be… [cont.]

What happens to the atoms of two metals when they create an alloy?
Q. So if copper and tin creates bronze, which is an alloy. Then what happens to the copper and tin atoms. Do they form a certain bond in the bronze?
Asked by scyus - Fri Nov 24 00:56:38 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Pure copper has a certain crystal structure as does pure tin. Bronze will have a different crystal structure, the exact form of which will depend on the ratio of copper and tin. (I am treating this as a general scenario, there is a chance that the crystal structure of copper and tin takes the same form - but this would be coincidental; and by chance/coincidence I don't mean theory doesn't define them - i just don't know crystal theory all that well)

How do I clean my new aluminum alloy pistol?
Q. I bought a new pistol today. It is a Smith and Wesson model 317 AirLite, .22LR. I own alot of handguns but this is my first one made from aluminum alloy. It's really lightweight and I love it. The guy in the gunshop couldn't find the original maunal that belonged with this gun (it was a display model in a case, not in it's box) he told me to come back by this Monday or Tuesday and he would have it for me then. Anyway, I shot this gun a couple hundred times today and it it covered with gunpowder. It needs to be cleaned tonight before I put it away. Does anyone know how to safely clean this gun? Do I use the same products on it as I use to clean all my other guns, or do I need something special for the aluminum? I dont want to chance… [cont.]
Asked by I know, I know!!!! - Sat Jan 13 19:02:30 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The absolute best part about a .22lr firearm is that all you need is some RemOil and .22cal patches. Some would argue that you should use bore cleaner, but this is not really necessary unless you shoot the gun a whole lot than let it sit forever. If you use a phosphor-bronze .22 brush, be very careful. Go buy a brass boreguide if you do not trust yourself. Using a Boresnake is ok too. Lets recap: 1. RemOil will clean all externals 2. Using a short cleaning rod, patch clean Bbl (with or without brush) 3. Wipe of ALL excess (IMPORTANT!) It is very easy to ruin the exterior integrity of a gun (it's been done millions of times-even I am guilty) by obsessive cleaning. If you are ever in doubt about a method-DON'T DO IT! Q. What is the best way to remove baked on brake dust from painted factory alloy wheels? I am talking about baked brown brake dust. I have used eagle one wheel cleaner and scrubbed it with a brush, which helped but there has to be something better that will remove it yet not affect the wheels finish. A. Brake cleaner, usually used during servicing on brakes to clean all the solid dust of the bits and pieces in there, should work but just test it on an inconspicuous area or the rim to check for any discoloration, it should be fine though

What type of metal alloy is used in Motorcycle Frames?
Q. I'm making my own motorcycle frame but I'm curious to know what type of metal alloy is best to use in terms of weight, strength, and durability. (stainless steel? Iron? etc... ) Are these metal tubes available on the market? What are they? What are they made of? How much do they cost per meter? Are they easy to weld?
Asked by gillamacs - Sun Aug 20 12:31:33 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. As many different alloys as there are motorcycles, typically a cro-moly for modern bikes for weight and strength. However, aluminum and mild steel have been used extensively. Really depends on your application, i.e. engine size, type of bike etc. Stainless is usually to:expensive, heavy, prone to fatigue except for very specific applications. Cro-moly and high carbon steel can be difficult to weld and still retain good strength characteristics, same for aluminum leaving TIG as the only practical method with these materials. Mild steel will weld up quite nicely with oxy-acetylene. In short, plan on mild steel and having a serviceable frame that is somewhat weaker and heavier then technically feasible Of course, lots of money changes… [cont.]
