Why is AD,Anno Domini, in Latin while BC, Before Christ, is in English? What was non English term?
Q. The question is about the inconsistency of AD and BC. The former is in Latin, Anno Domini, the latter in English. Was there a European version of BC?

A. The Latin versions are: AC - Ante Christum - before Christ AD - Anno Domini - in the year of our Lord

A. In the year of our Lord Jesus Christ As a rule you name the specific year after that phrase. For example, Anno Domini Nostri Iesu Christi CXII (which would mean simply 112 AD).

OK BC and AD.. Before Christ and Anno Domini... So how does it work?
Q. BC is before Christ so how does it work? When did it start? does it count forward or backwards? What years did Christ come? How did we know to change the BC to AD? Did the people of the BC time period know it was BC? How did they keep track of the years?
Asked by JayRod - Wed Mar 31 09:39:02 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Different people had different systems for counting the years. In Ancient Rome, for example, they started at year 0 for each new Emperor, and would refer to the past as "year 4 of Nero's reign" or whatever. BC counts backwards. So 100 years before Jesus was born, we would refer to as 100BC. And as for when time started? That's a tricky question, as time can be a complicated beast. The simplest answer would be that time started at the Big Bang, 15 billion years ago. BC is really just a way for us to quantify time and say when things happened in the past. For example, the ice age stared roughly around 8000BC.

I'm looking for a description or map which identifies the cultures where years are numbered as per Anno Domini?
Q. It is probably much easier to list the exceptions (since most cultures use the Jesus-based standard of considering this year 2010.) So where would one, for example, expect to find newspapers which make no mention of this being the year 2010 and thereby avoid any acknowledgment of the Anno Domini numbering standard? (Obviously, even those which use "C.E." are also basing their chronologies upon the life of Jesus Christ. They simply are avoiding mention of him or a title of Jesus. So there's no need to reiterate the thinking behind the euphemisms because they are just as Jesus-based.) === Of course "C.E" remains Jesus-based. It simply replaces "A.D." with "C.E" without any attempt to change the numbering systems origination date (which… [cont.]

A. "Common Era" isn't "Jesus-based." It's specifically open to all cultures, since there is no culture associated with it. 1 is just an arbitrary starting date anyway, and, if you knew anything, you'd realize that Jesus wasn't born in 1 CE according to most Jesus scholars.

A. The calendar goes from 1 BC to AD 1 (there is no zero year). The Birth of Jesus was probably around 6 BC - here is a long winded explaination of why I think this: The Bible puts the birth of Jesus: (1) Before the death of King Herod [Luke 1.5]; ) Josephus records that Herod died in April of 4 BC.[ However Chuck Missler quotes anothersource which gives the death of King Herod as January 14, 1 B.C. (Magillath Ta'anith, an ancient Jewish scroll contemporary with Jesus.) ] The magi came to Herod and told him when they had seen the star of Christ in the East. Herod wanting to protect his royal line had all males in Bethlehem under two-year old killed. (Matthew 2.1) a The Joseph family fled in time and took refuge in Egypt. They returned… [cont.]

A. Neither! This is totaly false! It was Roman Emperor Constantine that chose the birthday of Christ. Dec 25th... He had adopted Chistianity as his faith and wanted to make it appealing to his population and chose late December as the time for the major celebration because it was when everyone already celebrated the solstice... Nobody disputes this! Talk to an Archeologist or Historian... And by all accounts and estimates the actual date would have been in the spring time and around 5 years earlier (5 BC) Anyone who tells you that Christ was born in December is trying to pull a fast one on you...

A. (it's before christ not death btw) 1000 bc, 999 bc, 5 bc, 5 ad, 10 ad and 1000 ad. B.C. counts down to 'the birth of christ, though 'historically' it was supposed to have happened in 4 b.c. Anno domini meaning 'in the year of our lord' is any time after christ's birth though to be politically correct it is now BCE and CE (before common era, and common era) which, being non christian, i prefer personally *shrugs*.

A. If it's really important for you to be formally correct, the order everyone is telling you is mistaken. It should be reversed -- "AD 2007" meaning "in the year of (our) Lord 2007". "Traditionally English copies Latin usage by placing the abbreviation before the year number for AD, but after the year number for BC" But many people do not know this and simply assume the pattern is the same is for BC ("before Christ") dates. So in popular use you will often find the order "2007 AD" .

If the Anno Domini system was developed by a monk named Dionysius Exiguus in Rome in 525 AD..?
Q. Seeing that he created the modern calender as it stands today, what did they use before that literally, say we go back to what we call 44 BC or BCE (that stands for before common era or Before Christs) So what was the year and date called before all that? I know that their was a Gregorian Calender and Julius Caesar improved it, but that stilld does not totally answer my questions. say in our minds it is 44 BCE the year Caesar is assassinated, what did the people of That time period call the date? Sure it was the Ides of March, but what did they call the year certainly not 44 BCE? I also doubt Augustus Caesar had AD 1 or AD12 either. So what did they use until 525 AD when it was all changed? A. There were many other year numbering systems throughout Europe and the world. King and Emperors often declared the year to be based on when they or their family came to power. There were other religious calanders such as the Hebrew calendar. There was a Persian calendar, a Babylonian calendar, an Egyptian calendar, a Chinese calendar, Mayan calendars. It wasn't until the 8th century when a single calendar began being accepted widely throughout Europe and then later, around the world.

Asked by michaelamanuba - Wed Sep 6 06:10:29 2006 - - 22 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Anno Domini (Latin: "In the Year of the Lord"), abbreviated as AD, defines an epoch based on the traditionally-reckoned year of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. Similarly, Before Christ (from the Ancient Greek "Christos" or "Anointed One", referring to Jesus), abbreviated as BC, is used in the English language to denote years before the start of this epoch. Some non-Christians use the abbreviations AD and BC without intending to acknowledge the Christian connotation. Some people prefer the alternatives 'CE' and 'BCE', arguing that they are more neutral terms

A. I actually wondered about the CE/AD thing myself... good question! I do agree with you that a lot of JW teachings are off the mark of what the Bible is teaching. However, since I feel the need to stick up for JWs when necessary, I would like to point out that Anno Domini is actually "The year of our Lord" in Latin, and not "Jesus is Lord". It appears that the Watchtower feels that Jesus was not born in the year that the Calendar makes out to be "the year of our Lord" and that is why they choose to use CE instead. I found the following quote from a Watchtower online, however it is NOT from my personal collection, so if any JW has this particular mag, please let me know if the quote is accurate...because I do not have any intentions… [cont.]

Q. 3000 Ducats in, say, 1500 Anno Domini.

A. The comparison really can't be made. You may have been a rich man in 1500 AD with 3000 ducats, but you wouldn't have been able to buy an x-box, a tv, a computer, an ipod or a dishwasher. You probably could have purchased a house that was walls, roof, fireplace and windows. (no electric, plumbing, central air, air conditioning, toilet, etc.) So, if you're poor in the USA today, you are able to live better than the average king of ad 1500. ( although it doesn't come with the social benefits of status in society. )
